Auch Italic genannt, im englischen Sprachgebrauch wurde die Bezeichnung zu Chancery verkürzt.
Kursiv kommt vom lateinischen currere = laufen. Das erklärt auch, wie diese Schriftform entstanden ist. Die Grundform bilden die Minuskeln der humanistischen Antiqua. Durch zügiges Schreibtempo neigen sich die Buchstaben leicht nach rechts und verbinden sich häufig miteinander.
Für den Abschluß der Oberlängen gibt es zwei Möglichkeiten: keilförmig nach links ausgerichtet oder bogenförmig nach rechts. Es ist durchaus möglich, diese Formen zu mischen, z. B. bei Doppelbuchstaben wie ll.
Meist ist die Humanistische Kursive um etwa 5 bis 10 Grad nach rechts geneigt, es gibt aber Varianten, die senkrecht sind oder noch stärker geneigt.
Die Grundhöhe der Buchstaben beträgt 5 Federbreiten für Minuskeln und 7 Federbreiten für Majuskeln. Die Serifen ragen 4 bis 5 Federbreiten über die Oberlinie und unterhalb die Grundlinie. Halten Sie die Feder in einem Winkel von 45 Grad.
